From time to time, we are asked to prepare itinerary packages for individuals, couples or families who are either unable to travel on our regular holidays or would simply prefer to experience a trip independently of our usual groups. The frequency of these requests is increasing, so we decided that the time was right to launch a full programme of Independent & Self-Drive holidays. So, what does this mean? Well, it means that you can choose any of the tours featured in our 2nd edition 2020 brochure and enjoy it without being part of a group holiday. That’s right, we’ll tailor it to suit your needs. Whether you want to stay in hotels or you’d prefer the charm of B&Bs, whether you’d like to drive your own car or fly to your chosen destination and hire a vehicle, or whether you want to stay for just a weekend or make it a two-week extended adventure, we will create a bespoke package to meet your exact requirements.

Wonder what a self-drive holiday might look like?
Take our classic Orkney & Shetland tour, for example. Our suggested itinerary, which runs for nine days, looks something like this:
Day 1
Drive to Aberdeen in time to catch the overnight ferry to Lerwick.
Day 2
Begin your exploration of historic Shetland, perhaps with a visit to the remote islands of Yell and Unst, about as far north as you can drive in the British Isles. Later, you’ll drive onwards to your hotel in Lerwick for the evening.
Day 3
Today you may wish to visit the little island of Mousa, where you’ll find an outstanding example of a 2,000-year-old broch. Alternatively, choose to simply explore your host town of Lerwick.
Day 4
After visits to Scalloway and the ruined castle of Earl Patrick Stewart, the RSPB Reserve at Sumburgh Head, and the Prehistoric and Norse Site of Jarlshof, take the evening sailing from Lerwick over to Kirkwall. From there, you’ll drive on to your harbourside hotel.
Day 5
Explore Neolithic Orkney today with visits to Maeshowe, Skara Brae, and the great stone circles of Stenness and Brodgar.
Day 6
Suggested visits today include the beautiful little Italian Chapel, the Churchill Barriers and the Cathedral of St. Magnus in Kirkwall.
Day 7
Take a ferry to one of the outer islands, such as the Hoy, where you can discover the Scapa Flow exhibition, the Napoleonic Martello tour or the poignant war cemetery.
Day 8
This morning, catch a ferry to the island of Westray or a flight to North Ronaldsay – both prime locations for birdwatching. In the evening, you’ll take an overnight ferry back to Aberdeen.
Day 9
The tour comes to an end in Aberdeen and you’re free to travel home at your leisure.
