Wish Upon A Winter Escape This Year

If the thought of another winter spent sitting on the sofa, dreading the bad weather outside, is about as unappealing as eating Christmas turkey leftovers for days on end, then we might have just the solution! Why not treat yourself to a holiday?

Sure, November to January might not seem like obvious months to take a trip, but if you stop and think about it for a moment – there are benefits. Not only will you make a season that's filled with short days and often bone-chilling temperatures more enjoyable, you can also take advantage of the fact that tourist season is typically well and truly over. What's more, if you're looking for a way to spend Christmas in a new place this year, a festive break is a fantastic fix.

Christmas Holidays

There are many reasons why we might look to spend Christmas in a different destination and here at Brightwater, we consider to them all. Whether you're a solo traveller looking for some companionship over the holidays or you simply don't want to spend the festive period in an endless cycle of cooking and washing up (we know, we've been there!), we have something for you...

Head south and join our Christmas in Cornwall trip, for 5 days enjoying the festivities on the coast. If you're after something more scenic, we have our Christmas in Derbyshire in the Peak District holiday, which includes a full programme of Christmas activities. Or, why not choose to explore Scotland and join our Christmas in the Scottish Borders trip, where carols and a stunning excursion through Border country await? Each of these tours includes all the festive cheer and trimmings, making your Christmas away from home a comfortable and memorable one.

Of course, we'll also take you to witness the famous Strokkur geyser erupt and to enjoy a soak in one of the country's renowned geothermal hot springs. During this 5-day exploration, there will be multiple chances to hunt the elusive aurora borealis. If you miss this year's tour, it will run again in 2020!

17th November 2019 | From £1,995pp

Up Helly Aa

If you're interested by traditions, the charming location of Lerwick in Scotland plays host annually to the great Up Helly Aa festival – a Viking 'end of winter' celebration, illuminated by fire. Run by Shetlanders for Shetlanders (but that’s not to say visitors aren’t welcome and the island hospitality will be as warm as ever), to experience it is to be very privileged indeed. Wandering around on the day of the main event, it's common to see bearded Vikings in all their typical gear holding torches set aflame in all shades of orange. A 30-foot longship is carried through the town before being ceremoniously set alight.

Aside from Up Helly Aa itself, we'll take you on a tour of Yell and Unst, and there will be a chance to wander along the spectacular sea cliffs at Eshaness, which offer amazing views over the islets and offshore rocks.

Choose between a 5, 6 or 7 day tour and enjoy a taste of this very local, fascinating tradition.

25th, 26th and 27th January 2020 | From £875pp
