Highlights of Orkney and Shetland

Another destination in Scotland filled with unique history and heritage awaits, this time the Highlights of Orkney and Shetland. Starting from just $1,585pp and with departures dotted throughout the coming seasons, the choice of when you visit is yours! Enjoy views from the spectacular sea cliffs at Eshaness, observe seabirds if you choose a May - July departure, and explore the archaeology on offer in the heart of Neolithic Orkney, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Another highlight is this tour's visit to the little Italian chapel, built on the site of a former prisoner of war camp. Several hundred Italians, captured during the North African campaign of World War II, were sent here to work on the causeways and converted two huts into a chapel. The marvellous paintings in the interior were done by Domenico Chiocchetti, one of the prisoners who returned several times to restore and repaint parts of it.

A Classic Scottish Steam Break

Embrace the golden era of travel and embark upon a Scottish steam vacation this year. What better way to admire the stunning countryside than from the comfort of a classic carriage, as steam billows from the racing train's funnel? Starting from just $895, this four-day tour is a real treat for the steam enthusiasts among us. Highlights range from a unique boat journey on the Falkirk Wheel (the world’s first rotating boat lift) and a boat trip among the majestic surroundings of Loch Lomond where we learn of the life and times of the outlaw Rob Roy and also visit Inveraray Castle, to a captivating sailing on Loch Katrine aboard the SS Walter Scott. The main attraction, of course, is our journey on the Jacobite steam train as it travels the Fort William to Mallaig route, passing over the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct and more.

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show

Departing on 21st May, this week-long tour offers a chance to attend the legendary RHS Chelsea Flower Show in London. New for 2020 is a special new garden category – Urban Gardens – as well as a pavilion filled with color. Whether you're a Chelsea first-timer or a veteran visitor, this year is a great one to go! Other visits on this flower-filled vacation include the RHS Garden Wisley, Hestercombe Gardens (a real horticultural masterpiece from Gertrude Jekyll and Edwin Lutyens) and the fantastic Stourhead, where temples, urns and grottoes await discovery. From our hotel in the West Country we visit the ancient Bishop’s Palace in Wells, the Harold Peto-designed garden at Iford Manor and the city of Bath, which is deservedly famous for its Roman baths and elegant Georgian terraces.

Seasonal Gardens of Japan

Departing on 25th March or 11th November, take advantage of the stunning seasons in Japan on our special gardens tour. So, if you were as obsessed with Monty Don's Japanese Gardens programme as we were, treat yourself and discover them in person. The itinerary is broad, starting in Kyoto at the gardens of the Imperial Palace and moving onward through the historic town of Omi Hachiman, Nara (where we explore the Todai-ji Temple and can wander among the incredibly tame deer at Nara Park) and Tokyo. Elsewhere, there's a full-day excursion to Hakone and Mount Fuji. This is a fantastic introduction to Japan and its mesmerising gardens, and at 13-days long, it certainly packs a lot in.

Villas and Gardens of the Italian Lakes

One of the most awe-inspiring views in all of Italy has to be the little islands that appear to float on its lakes in the north. Dotted with little houses and churches, these are stunning to look at and charming to visit. This tour explores a succession of beautiful villas and their gardens, ranging from Villa Cicogna (which we tour privately in the company of its owner) to Villa Balbianello, with its impeccably maintained garden. This tour's highlight, perhaps, is the visit to the private garden of the President of the Italian Camellia Society, which is home to a remarkable collection of over 500 plants. During our stay on Lake Maggiore, we will also pay visits to a fascinating wholesale specialist plant nursery, Villa Taranto and Villa Pallavicino.
