Meet your guide for the tour

Peter studied archaeology and the history of art at the University of Leicester, and went on to become the Head of Cultural Heritage and then Principal Heritage Researcher at Historic Scotland, working across their 340 properties in care as well as in the management of World Heritage Sites. He worked as an archaeologist throughout the UK for over 40 years, directing and publishing major excavations, and has also written a number of books. Peter now works independently, pursuing his own research interests and providing heritage consultancy services.

In the Footsteps of the Picts | 19 - 22 June | 4 days for $895pp

After being collected from your specified pick-up point, the first visit will be to Edinburgh's National Museum of Scotland, where the group is joined by one of the museum's curators for a specially-arranged guided tour of the Pictish jewellery and sculpture. The remainder of the tour unpacks the story of the Picts, exploring standing stones carved with mysterious symbols, poring over artifacts at captivating museums and enjoying enlightening talks from our guide, Peter. Elsewhere, take a boat to the monastery on the Isle of Mey, see the stone sarcophagus at St. Andrews and visit a Pictish hillfort at Dunkeld. Travel through the heartland of the southern Picts in Perthshire and Angus, tracking down these elusive people and coming face-to-face with them through the clues of their everyday life.
