Ireland Overview

Ireland – the Emerald Isle – is an awe-inspiring place to visit. It is home to stunning sights, natural wonders, amazing history, and Guinness! From an archaeological perspective, it starts with the initial evidence of humans in Ireland around 10500 BC and concludes with the start of the historical record around 400 AD. The prehistoric period includes the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age societies of Ireland. On the whole, for much of Europe, the historical record starts when the Romans invaded. The Romans, however, did not invade Ireland, and so its historical record starts later, with the arrival of Christianity. Culturally, Ireland is just as impressive. You may recognise the names of its prolific writers, from Seamus Heaney to James Joyce; or its musicians such as U2 and The Cranberries.   • Visa: For UK citizens, a visa is not required for a stay of up to three months in duration. American citizens are permitted to stay in Ireland for up to 90 days as a tourist without a visa.
  • Currency: In the Republic of Ireland, the official currency is the euro.
  • Packing advice: In the summer, light cotton clothes are recommended as temperatures can get fairly high. If you are planning to visit the cities and towns, you may want to bring comfortable walking shoes. Pack sunglasses, a sun visor or hat, and sunscreen for the sunnier days. It rains often in Ireland, so it's advisable to pack a waterproof coat. In winter, it will pay to wrap up warm as temperatures can drop to just below zero.
  • Language: English is the most widely spoken language in Ireland.
  • Cultural differences: There are not many cultural differences between the Irish, the British and the Americans. The Irish are warm and friendly, and they generally enjoy welcoming visitors to their beautiful nation.
  • Tipping: Ireland has no formal tipping customs, but gratuities are always welcome. In restaurants and bars, service is sometimes added to the bill, but it's always smart to check in case it hasn't been. If there’s no added service charge, you may tip around 10% for good service. Tipping for bar service is considered impolite.
