Summary

The star of Channel 5’s The Yorkshire Steam Railway, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is one of the most popular heritage railways in the country and also one of the longest, traveling through some glorious scenery in a truly authentic recreation of the golden age of steam. We take the train as far as Grosmont and continue to Whitby, where we visit the town’s newest attraction, a full-sized replica of Captain James Cook’s bark Endeavor.

Our other two steam train experiences are on the Wensleydale Railway, which takes us from Leeming Bar to the terminus at Redmire and back, a round trip of about two and a half hours, full of the evocative sights and sounds of the steam age, and on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, which packs a lot into its relatively short length and is in constant demand as a film and TV location thanks to its wealth of period detail. We conclude with a pilgrimage to the National Railway Museum in York, a mecca for all rail enthusiasts with its unrivaled collection of locomotives, coaches and countless other pieces of railway memorabilia.
